Academic Portfolio

My research explores the psychological experiences of individuals within correctional environments, mental health interventions, behaviour change processes, and the social factors influencing human development. I focus on rehabilitation psychology, the psychological impact of incarceration, and community reintegration.

My work reflects a commitment to strengthening mental health systems, improving rehabilitation frameworks, and contributing to evidence-based practices in counselling, criminal justice, and social development.

Primary Research Study

Effects of Remand Experiences on the Psychological Disposition of Inmates in Selected Prisons in Kiambu County, Kenya

Institution: Mount Kenya University
Supervisor: Dr. Florence K’Okul
Year: 2023

This study investigated how remand detention affects the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural functioning of inmates in selected prisons within Kiambu County. The research highlighted key stressors experienced during remand, including prolonged uncertainty, isolation, case delays, overcrowding, exposure to traumatic conditions, and weakened family and social support systems.

Findings showed that extended remand periods significantly influence psychological wellbeing and place inmates at greater risk of distress, anxiety, depression, and behavioural challenges. The study recommended enhanced psychosocial support, improved mental health services, structured rehabilitative programmes, and timely legal processes to safeguard inmate wellbeing.
