Effects of Remand Experiences on the Psychological Disposition of Inmates in Selected Prisons in Kiambu County, Kenya

Type: Research Project
Institution: Mount Kenya University
Supervisor: Dr. Florence K’Okul
Year: 2023

This research examined how remand experiences influence inmates’ emotional, cognitive, and behavioural functioning within selected prisons in Kiambu County. The study explored major psychological stressors faced during remand, including uncertainty about case outcomes, prolonged detention, disrupted family ties, exposure to traumatic environments, and the strain of institutional living.

Findings showed that remand detention significantly affects psychological wellbeing, contributing to increased vulnerability to anxiety, depression, hopelessness, aggression, and diminished coping capacity. The study recommended enhanced mental health services, timely legal processes, strengthened psychosocial support, and rehabilitative programming within remand facilities to safeguard inmate wellbeing.
